FAQ
Q : Why upgrade to the latest firmware needed ?
A : Because the latest firmware can solve a lot of bugs such as slow messaging, slow opening gallery, RAM issue, etc.

Q : I have Nokia phone that still in warranty why must i follow your tutorial while i can upgrade in Nokia Center ?
A : You're right. You don't need this one. Please go to "Nokia Center" to upgrade your firmware free of charge.

Q : Why offline? You can use online update with Nokia Software Updater (NSU).
A : That's because someone may had a bad Internet connection.
If downloads from rapidshare failed, you can just re-download again and again,
BUT if download (online update) through NSU failed then your phone is DEAD.

Q : I have N70 or N73 or another N-series. I want to upgrade to Music Edition or Internet Edition with the latest firmware. Is that possible ?
A : Yes. This is what i have done. Just follow this article.

Q : I pay a visit to blue-nokia.com and my phone is not listed. Do i need to upgrade ?
A : You're using old-fashion mobile phone (no offense, lol). Then you can read the rest of this article but you won't need upgrade your phone.

*. Create restore point through Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. Name it 'Before flashing' click create.
*. Remove Nokia PC Suite, Nokia Software Updater, Nokia Care Suite, Nokia Modem Drivers, Nokia Connectivity Drivers through Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, but DO NOT REMOVE PC Connectivity Solution and Windows - Nokia Modem.

*. Restart your PC.
*. Do not connect your phone before installing Phoenix software.
*. Disable all antivirus, firewall, anti-spyware, anti-malware etc.
*. Disable screen saver.
*. Check C:\Program files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\ If you have those folder in there delete all.

2. In your mobile phone :

*. Backup all your mobile phone content since all your data will be lost after flashing. (If you phone is dead, skip this step!)
*. If you protect your memory card with password, then remove it.
*. Remove your memory card from your mobile phone.
*. Go to Tools > Settings > Security > Phone and SIM.

- Set Pin code request to Off.
- Set Autolock period to None.
- Set Lock code to default password which is 12345.
- Set Lock if SIM changed to No.

*. Uninstall your mobile antivirus. (if you have any)
*. Charge your phone battery to at least 70% and keep charging. (Although flashing takes only 7-10 minutes.)

Begin Flashing

1. Install Phoenix Service Software 2009 or later :

*. First Extract the archive you have downloaded which contains Phoenix Service Software 2009 or later
*. Install the software. Be patient, it may take some minutes to install all the components.
*. Don't run Phoenix software after installation.
*. Connect your Nokia handset to your PC with USB cable in PC Suite mode.
*. windows will start installing the connectivity drivers as soon as you connect the phone. Let it install completely.

- If this process failed then you must be remove PC Connectivity Solution. But don't worry we created restore point earlier remember.
- Restore your system and start remove Nokia component again but do not remove PC Connectivity Solution.

2. Install Offline Firmware Package You Downloaded :

- If your firmware file is in .RAR format, first extract it using WinRar on desktop.
- On desktop you will find .EXE file of your firmware file.
- Install the EXE file. Do not change its path. It will install it to default location of C:\Program files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\

- If you have downloaded a firmware file which doesn't have an auto setup, then just copy your Extracted folder Manually in the directory C:\Program files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\
- Be sure you install updated firmware. You cannot downgrade your phone's firmware in BB5 phones which includes all new Nokia phones including N-Series. (N82, N90, ....) (But there is still some tricks!)
- Phoenix allows downgrading but your phone doesn't allow it as your phone has some special security built into. So no use of trying it. You'll get an error message.

3. Flashing Procedure (Updating to latest firmware version) :

- Open Phoenix Service Software by double click on the icon from your desktop.
- Connect your phone in PC Suite Mode.
- In Phoenix, click File > Manage Connections.
- Now click New.

- Now select the type of cable you are using. If you are using DKE-2, CA-53 [N-Series] cable, select USB.

- Click Next. It will find your product and say FOUND. If it doesn't find any, you can try changing your cable type by clicking Back.
- Click Next and then Finish.

- Now your cable type (USB) appears in the connection list. Select it. Click APPLY and then CLOSE.
- Now select File > Open Product.

- A list of RM code will open. Select your phone's RM code. Like RM-133 for Nokia N73 or RM-84 for Nokia N70 and other nokia's with there corresponding Rm Types but choose the one which corresponds to your phone! Click OK. At this steps if you receive an error its okay. Just ignore it.

- Now select File > Scan Product.
- Your phone's firmware info will appear at the extreme bottom of the Phoenix window.
- Now go to Flashing > Firmware Update.
- A window will open.
- On that window click Browse button (the one with three dots)

- A window will open with various products and various regions. Choose the region or country of your choice according to the language pack you want to install.
- Click OK.
- Click Refurbish.
- Now your actual flashing has started.

DO NOT TOUCH!
Don't touch your phone or press any button until the flashing has finished.
Also don't touch your data cable and your computer system.
Remember don't Touch! (Still touching?)

- At the end Phoenix will tell you to remove your phone as the flashing has finished.
- Now wait for your phone to reboot into latest firmware.
- The flashing procedure takes 7-10 minutes

4. Flashing Dead Phones [Which show only white screen on startup] :

Note: You can install any firmware in dead phones whether it is latest and or the old one.
Note (Again): You can make a dead phone if you want! Just unplug your cable while flashing!

The procedure is almost same as regular flashing.

- Start Phoenix. Connect your phone with USB Cable (phone is off at this time).
- Click File > Open Product. Select your RM code from the window that appears. Click OK.
- Click File > Manage Connections. Select No Connection. Then APPLY and CLOSE.
- Now straight away click Flashing > Firmware Update.

- A window will open. Click on Browse button. (the one with 3 dots)
- A window will open with various products and various regions. Choose the region or country of your choice according to the language pack you want to install.
- Here is different part, check the option "Dead Phone USB Flashing".
- Click Refurbish.
- Flashing has started.

- After some seconds flashing will pause and asking you to turn your phone ON. (Or maybe not, It depends on phone)
- Press POWER button of your phone until backlight comes up. Remember not to remove your cable or even remove it accidentally will switching on your phone!!
- Flashing will proceed.
- Your phone will automatically start when the flashing finishes.

After finish you can safely remove your data cable from Phone. FINISHED!!!

5. Extra

  1. When I am in this step:

*. Now go to Flashing > Firmware Update.
    *. A window will open.
*. On that window click Browse button (the one with three dots)

When I click the Browse button, it shows a dialog:

Neither DP1.0 nor DP2.0 was found for the Product, or the Product cannot be identified.

    My Nokia 5800:
0591814: 5800 RM-428 NAM Region US Sangalo Black NAVI

What can be done to fix? Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  2. I fix this by creating a folder, RM-428 to include the firmware files, under the Products folder instead of placing all the firmware files under the Products folder. So it is fine now.

So my question now is that it shows the firmware which is the same as my current phone. Doing a firmware flashing won't change anything, right? Mine is V31 now and I would like to upgrade to the V40. Also, mine is the NAM (North America) version and it does not have Chinese language support. What should I do to let it support both English and Chinese?

No Special Idea! but try these...

    - Please make sure you download & install latest data package from blue-nokia.com

    - Check out if 2 different data package installed, it may not work!

Some data package will install to:
    "C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products"

    OR

    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nokia\DataPackage\Products"

Phoenix will not detect any product when 2 same data package installed in these 2 folders.

    - Did you select right RM ? (you can make sure by removing battery and see the label)

    ------------------------
    Another Solution:
    ------------------------
    Follow these steps:

    1 open phoenix
    2 click tools tab
    3 now image file download
4 enter your product code there
    5 start downloading
    6 when download finished ...
    7 click flashing
    8 firmware update
9 click the product code there
10 select it and do start flashing.

    ------------------------

    - If your phone is not dead, try using "Nokia Software Updater"

If you want to have both English and Chinese supported, you must download APAC (Asia and Pasific) Package. I think.
It may not available for latest versions. (you must wait till it comes out!)

  5. Question:
    1. My 5800 is the RM-428 NAM. Can I change it to RM-356 which has Chinese language support? If this is doable, any ideas how to do it?

    2. If I can't change from RM-428 to RM-356, can I copy files from RM-356 and place them under RM-428? Do I need to rename all the file names if done in this way? RM-428 is only up to V31 and RM-356 is V40. Will the copy and rename work?

    3. Does change a product code affect the RM?

    ReplyDelete
  6. @fc:
    1. No, You can not change the RM version, but you can always change the "Product Code" (thats why I said it may void your Nokia warranty)

    2. It's impossible!

    3. No, you can always change "Product Code"

    ReplyDelete
  7. 1. So, I can only use product codes specific to RM-428, right?

    2. So far I can't find any Chinese language support from RM-428 from the navifirm software. So, I am out of luck?

    3. I found some people say copy and rename one file with xxx_prd.rofs2.V22 to the desired RM and it will work. If I know this will work, will let u know. Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  8. Great news! I copy a file with filename containing *prd.rofs2* from RM-356 to the RM-428 folder and rename the file name to the existing file name from RM-428. Then, flash the firmware and the Chinese language comes out.

  9. Hi. I tried flashing my Nokia N73 firmware to a new one. Unfortunately the cable got moved and my phone crashed. When am trying to switch it on…i just get a blank white screen for about 4-5 seconds and the phone goes switches off. When i tried switching it back on and continuously pressing the power switch, it switches on and shows the NOKIA logo and goes off again. Can you tell me how to flash it again please. I can’t check the option “Dead phone usb flashing” in Phoenix software even if it’s there. Help me please, what should i do to try flashing it again…and how? Thanking you in advance. Good day.

  10. @Danar:
I don't know why you can't select "Dead phone flashing", it may disabled for you, although you may try these:

    - Did you read this part carefully?
"4. Flashing dead phones [Which show only white screen on startup]"

    - Watch the video tutorial for dead phones, download link: http://www.4shared.com/file/224237003/42cf1920/Phoenix_Video_Tutorial_Dead_Ph.html

    - Try to reinstall Phoenix (first completely remove and than install it again)

There is nothing worst thing with a phone but DEAD! Your phone is already dead, and you won't kill your mobile with flashing, so just flash it and see the result!

  15. Dear Martik,

I'm a newbie. I have tried to flash my N97 Mini. I have followed your steps but I failed due to:

'The Data-Package for the product was found from several directories. This is an error condition and not allowed. Fix the situation and try again.

Directories and the format of the Data-Packages: c:\program files(x86)\Nokia\Phoenix\products\RM-555\, DP2.0'

I can't understand what it means, because there's no other Data-Package folder or files in the Common Files folder.

    Anyone can help?

  16. @Anonymous:
I have no idea! I think it's a some kind of bug in the Phoenix software, but I'm not sure about it!
Try uninstall the phoenix and delete its folder and all related files. Install it again in default path (Dont make any changes during installation - usually c:\program file)
Find your latest mobile firmware from blue-nokia.com and install it in default path (don't make any changes)

If you solve your problem, please tell us how you solved it.

Phoenix does not work for all models, I'm not suggest to try again in this situation, it may kill your phone forever!
Take your phone to a repair center, they will flash it with devices called BOX.

  19. hi i do can understand the risk of flashing nokia phones rite now. solving my problem would be much appreciated. well i thought of downgrading my phone(N95 8GB RM-320 v31.0.16) by making it dead by removing the usb while flashing. but then i realized that my phone became useless. when i press the power button it just shows a white screen and goes off within 4-5seconds. i tried to research the problem using google skills and i almost got the answer from noeman.org. they said i need a RPL file and through that way i can get off this problem. but still i'm not sure whether this works. by the way where can i get this RPL file? i would do anything for wotever it takes unless this problem is solved. please help! i rushed to the store when the phone was released and got it for 700$ and it was worth it till now.N95 8gb is the best phone i ever had

  20. Hello and thanks for the nice complementary instruction on how to flash a mobile phone. Well, however I get an error while doing this. Here are the circumstances. I initialize the flashing procedure like said. I click refurbish. OK. Then after a few seconds I hear the sound of the disconnection and reconnection of a new device constantly. Checking the Devices and Printers on my win 7 I figure that the hardware being disconnected and reconnected is NOKIA USB ROM. That's why after a few seconds of the process of "Scanning Image Files..." I get the error saying that

    Failed to send wait request!
ERROR: Failed to set phone to flashmode
Getting BB5 Phone Information from Update Server...
ERROR: Unable to detect device 0x8401F145. Check USB connection!
Unable to get phone info from update server 0x8401F121
Unable to get phone information from Update Server

and finally a new window titled Product Flashing Failed:

The flashing failed. Do you like to retry the flashing?

    HRESULT 0x8421001e (-2078212066)

No connection to phone. Cannot start mode change for phone mode before flashing.

Please email me the answer at mxia_online@yahoo.com and fast :) thank you

    ReplyDelete
  21. @Mxia:
Your email (mxia_online@yahoo.com) is not valid.

BTW, did you uninstall PC suite before?

As you may know, removing cable or disconnecting phone (in any event), during flashing, cause make a dead phone! (I think you have one now) :(
If your phone is not booting up and only shows you a blank dim white screen, you have a dead phone. If not try flashing again, same way!

next time, unplug all external devices (printer, scanner, usb disks and ...) before flashing, if you have any.

Don't worry, you can fix it. just be a creative!

  23. Hi Martik.
First I have to say your post is great and well explained.
    I owned a Nokia E71.

    1. I would like to be able to completely back-up my Nokia (system+user data+apps) like I do with Acronis for my PC. Can it be done?

    2. I would like to make a proper reinstall of my Nokia, not an upgrade. You write about the "dead phone" option in Phoenix. Does this option lead to a full install from scratch of the phone?
It seems that Nemesis Service Suite can format the phone disk (Tools -> Factory settings -> Format user disk). Does formatting with NSS can be usefull to do a proper reinstall?

Thanks in advance for your time.

  24. @اللغة العربية:
Yes, you can always downgrade your phone, but its not recommended.
    ----------------------
    @Laurent:
    1. I don't know, I never backed up system files and apps before on my phone! (Only MP3's, images, and so on...)

    2. Yes, you can reinstall current firmware on your phone (find your proper firmware at mentioned website)
    - If your phone is running well now, to full reset phone memory, turn off your phone, while holding these three keys, turn it on. The keys are: "*(star)", "3" and "Call" (Green button)

NOTE: ALL DATA WILL BE LOST on phone memory! (first copy all files to memory stick and remove it)

If its already dead, yes, try NSS.
(BTW, during flashing, all phone data will be lost!)

  29. @nokia rocks:
    - Did you download correct RM version (firmware) for your phone?
    - Try select your RM manually from "File" menu.

    @MANUSONA:
    - Did phone battery fully charged?
    - Did you connect your phone correctly? (check the cable)
    - I think by now your phone is dead, try dead mode flashing.
    - If its not work, download other firmware version and try again.

  34. Are you seriously telling about "USB flashing" ? Im asking this coz i found that in my area, every mobile repairing shopman has a CD worth Rs 8000/- (=$160) and a large amount of extra hardware cabels which they puts backside the phone. And when i asked them about fleshing by usb, they told me even fool and mental(mean their answer was "it cant be possible"). Are you trying to say that they all are fool (or at least 'not inteligent')?. If it is, then i will become a hero and a super inteligent person among them(although im already). Thank thank thank thank thank you dear.

Did you try Dead phone flashing?

    ReplyDelete
  42. HI Martik

Yea, i tried the dead USB phone flashing and still phoenix can not set the phone to flashing mode..
it reaches the place where it tells me to power on the phone but the phone can not power on, thus can't set to flashing mode...

    ReplyDelete
  43. @kstevey:
I have no idea about that.(every nokia phones act different! - because of the firmware and the model of device)

Please take a look at following quick guide, it may help:
    http://martik-scorp.blogspot.com/2010/11/how-to-use-phoenix-service-software.html

As I suggest everyone, I suggest you too, if you failed flashing, bring your phone to a Nokia service store. (but before, try one more time!)

  44. Hi Martik

I think i have got some improvements on the flashing..(nokia 2700c)
i realized that the phone is "ON" when i insert the battery.. when both phoenix and Jaf (in separate flashing) asks me to power on the phone, i press the power and the phone is detected.
files are sent to the phone 1. secondary boot 2. update server..
problem is now booting the phone after the files have been loaded to the phone. the phone disconnects itself from the usb when it is trying to boot.. this is the error i get from using phoenix http://twitpic.com/3biq20/full

    - Did you use latest firmware for your phone?
    - Did you try Dead phone flashing?
It seems that the firmware you want to install is older than you have on your phone. There is an option in the phoenix that allows you to downgrade your phone (I don't remember where it is exactly, but its something like "Allow SW downgrade" you must mark it.)

Important Note: Downgrading may not work on all phones. You can't downgrade the firmware, no matter how many times you try! (but take your chance)

    - Find a firmware that is newer or same as your phone firmware.

Please note that I don't take any responsibility for any damage and lost.

    - Turn off the phone. While holding the following three keys, turn on the phone. keep holding till phone's completely boot up.
NOTE: This will perform hard reset and all data will be lost.

As its some features are not working..and i searched for APAC language fimware on this page- http://www.blue-nokia.com/index02.html ,but couldn't find it there..tell me where to find it.. and the exact procedure for flashing my phone correctly..

i'll be really thankfull to u.if u help me out with this situation..

  57. @Achin:
If it's not there, it means it's not released yet. I think the "SEAP" is similar to "APAC", but I'm not sure. You can use that. (Do t at your own risk.)
